Illegal pet boarding house
Petknode operators Shahrul Azuwan Adanan and Yushairi Khairuddin, both 29, were
fined RM6,000 over the animal abuse case leading to the death of eight cats
from hunger and dehydration at a Damansara Damai location.
Shahrul and Yushairi were
jointly charged under Section 44 (1)(d) of the Animal Act. They received the
maximum of a RM200 fine per charge. They received no jail sentence.
The two men initially pleaded
not guilty but changed their plea to guilty on June 12.
Both men apologised publicly
over what happened, stating that there were too many cats to look after during
the Hari Raya holiday period at the boarding centre and they could not cope.
Volunteers among animal lovers
had broken into Petknode to rescue about 30 cats, revealing the tragic case to
an outraged Malaysia.
A group of pet owners and
animal lovers were seen gathered at court at the time of the verdict, yelling
at Shahrul and Yushairi as they left.
